John Adams’ Independence Day – July 2, 1776

July 2

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 2 of July, repeating indefinitely

Independence is formally declared. John Adams thought July 2nd would be the day Americans celebrated their independence. Today, in 1776, the Continental Congress signed the Lee Resolution, declaring us free and independent states. The Declaration of Independence – finished and signed on the 4th – is an extension to the original Lee document, which further details the justification for declaring our breakup with the crown.

So, Happy Independence Day! (According to John Adams)
