Unite or Die Stoneware Mug

$36.00

J. Henderson Artifacts

By its first printing in the Pennsylvania Journal in December 1774, the “Unite or Die” symbol had replaced the more ubiquitous “Join or Die” slogan. The American Revolution had evolved beyond the colonies needing to join the effort towards independence, and rather needed to unite and stay together toward a common cause.

All J. Henderson stoneware is hand-made and fired in a wood-burning kiln at their home in Williams, Indiana. Some of their pieces are exact reproductions, while others are based on historical styles. Glazes are modern simulations of the wide variety of salt-glazes and slips commonly seen.

There is no lead in any of the materials we use, and our pottery is safe for oven, microwave or dishwasher.

PLEASE NOTE: these mugs are individually handcrafted in small batches. While the images are fully representative of their appearance, please realize that each mug might vary slightly in uniformity.

Description

This stoneware tankard is handcrafted individually by the skilled artisans of J. Henderson Artifacts. Stoneware is a hard, high-fire ceramic that falls between earthenware and porcelain. The Chinese first produced it in 500B.C.; it was developed in the West between 1000-1200 A.D. Stoneware was in common use in Europe by the 16th C., and was brought to the New World with the colonists. It was commonly “salt-glazed”, a technique achieved by placing salt in the kiln during firing. There is no lead in any of the materials we use, and our pottery is safe for oven, microwave or dishwasher.
