A near-disaster and debilitating defeat for Washington's Army, the Battle of Brandywine occurred on September 11, 1777, and engaged more troops than any other battle of the American Revolution. It was also the second longest single-day battle of the war, after the Battle of Monmouth, with continuous fighting for 11 hours. While no casualty records survive, it's estimated that somewhere between 1,200-1,300 American soldiers were killed or captured by the British.
