Georgia became a state on January 2, 1788, when it ratified the U.S. Constitution, becoming the fourth state to join the Union. Originally founded as a British colony in 1732, Georgia was named after King George II of England. It played a significant role in the American Revolution and was one of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from British rule.
