The “GR arrow,” commonly known as the King’s Broad Arrow, was a British government mark used throughout the 17th and 18th centuries to denote Crown property during the reigns of the Georgian kings (Georgius Rex). It was most famously carved into New England white pine trees in the American colonies, which were prized for their height and strength and reserved for use as masts in the Royal Navy. Also appearing on military supplies, weapons, and buildings, the broad arrow asserted royal control and became a widely resented symbol of imperial authority, helping fuel colonial opposition in the years leading up to the American Revolution.
