In 1799, James Monroe purchased 1,000 acres of land in Albemarle County at the urging of his friend Thomas Jefferson. The Monroes would live at Highland until 1826, and many of the aromatic florals we still enjoy today derive from the native plants also enjoyed by the Monroes. Highland’s working apiary produces some of the most delicious wildflower honey available anywhere on the planet!
