Distinguished by its smoky flavor and affordability, Bohea tea (pronounced "boo-hee") was a popular type of black Chinese tea in the 18th century. A staple import of the East India Company, Bohea’s significance culminated during the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773, when American colonists—protesting taxation without representation—boarded British ships and dumped over 90,000 pounds of tea into Boston Harbor, 70,000 of which was comprised of Bohea.
